What Is a Reiki Attunement?

A Reiki attunement is a sacred process through which a Reiki Master transfers the ability to channel Reiki energy to a student. The word "attunement" itself is instructive — think of it as tuning a radio to a specific frequency. Before the attunement, you cannot pick up the Reiki frequency. After the attunement, you are permanently tuned to it, and you can channel Reiki energy for the rest of your life.

How Distance Attunements Work

One of the most remarkable aspects of Reiki is that attunements can be performed at a distance. The student and the Master do not need to be in the same room, the same city, or even the same country. This is not a shortcut or a lesser version of an in-person attunement — it is based on a fundamental principle of energy.

The Principle: Energy Is Not Bound by Space

Reiki is universal life energy (Rei = universal, Ki = life energy). It is the same energy that animates all living things. This energy is not physical — it does not travel through space like a sound wave or a light beam. It operates on a dimension that transcends physical distance. The Process

1. The Master prepares — The Reiki Master enters a meditative state and connects with the universal energy field.
2. The student prepares — The student sits or lies down in a quiet, comfortable position, ideally at the agreed-upon time. They relax, breathe deeply, and set an intention to receive the attunement with openness and gratitude.
3. The attunement is performed — The Master uses Reiki symbols (particularly the Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen symbol, which is the distance healing symbol) to bridge the physical gap. The Master visualizes the student, draws the symbols, and opens the energy channel within the student's energy body.
4. The student receives — The student may feel warmth, tingling, pulsing, emotional release, visual imagery, or a deep sense of peace. Some students feel nothing specific but notice changes in the days that follow. Every experience is valid.
5. Integration — After the attunement, the energy continues to integrate over a period of 21 days (the traditional cleansing period). The student may notice emotional releases, physical adjustments, and shifts in consciousness.

What to Expect During a Distant Attunement

Every person's experience is unique, but common sensations include:

• Warmth or heat in the hands, crown, or throughout the body
• Tingling or pulsing sensations, especially in the palms and fingers
• Visual experiences — seeing colors, light, symbols, or imagery with closed eyes
• Emotional release — crying, laughing, or feeling waves of emotion
• Deep relaxation — a sense of peace, stillness, or floating
• Nothing at all — and this is perfectly fine. The attunement works regardless of whether you feel it.
